Palmetto Freedom Forum – A Better Debate Paradigm

It should be clear to anyone who watched the Palmetto Freedom Forum, there is a better way for citizens to get to know their political candidates. Gone were the “gotcha” questions we see in every mainstream media ran debate. Gone were the one minute soundbite answers, the bells, whistles and buzzers, as well as trivial questions such as; “Coke or Pepsi”? Instead, the panel asked serious questions, involving real issues, that every American citizen should be concerned with.

The five candidates were given 22 minutes each to respond to a myriad of questions, ranging from constitutional first principles to economic policy and social issues. In this format, voters have a real opportunity to evaluate each candidates strengths and weaknesses. Romney showed depth of knowledge in relation to fiscal and economic issues, while on the other hand, showing a weakness in regards to social and constitutional conservative principles. Newt Gingrich displayed an excellent understanding of the political landscape, while Ron Paul’s expert knowledge of monetary policy was quite evident.

Unlike the standard boring debate format, this type of interaction gives voters a chance to get a true feel for candidates and allows both to connect in a way that was heretofore, much more difficult. The mainstream media should take note of this event and be willing to move away from their current stodge debate format. Regardless, I think we will see much more of this kind of debate format in the future.

Jim DeMint’s Labor Day Freedom Forum Steaming Live @3:00pm

Columbia, SC – The Advisory Committee of the American Principles Project Palmetto Freedom Forum announced today that former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney will participate in the upcoming Labor Day event in Columbia, SC. Romney joins a group of five previously confirmed GOP candidates: Minnesota U.S. Representative Michele Bachmann, Businessman Herman Cain, Former Speaker of the U.S. House Newt Gingrich, Texas U. S. Representative Ron Paul, and Texas Governor Rick Perry.

“Having full participation from all declared candidates who qualified for the forum proves once again how critical South Carolina is in choosing the next president. This forum will provide a unique opportunity for candidates to discuss their commitment to America’s first principles and how we can move our country forward again,” said Sen. Jim DeMint.

The American Principles Project Palmetto Freedom Forum will follow a unique format, designed to allow invited candidates to engage in a thoughtful, substantive discussion of their stances on critical issues facing our country. Candidates will be on the stage one-at-a-time and will participate in a question and answer session with three panelists: U.S. Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC), U.S. Representative Steve King (R-IA), and Dr. Robert P. George, founder of the American Principles Project and McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence at Princeton University. The event will be moderated by David Stanton, a veteran of South Carolina presidential events and a well-known, respected former local news anchor.

Reid Kills $1.2 Trillion Spending Bill To Push For Dream Act Amnesty For Illegals Bill

Harry Reid tables the $1.2 trillion spending bill in favor of pushing through the the rest of the progressive democrat’s agenda, including votes on the Dream Act and a bill to repeal “Don’t ask, Don’t Tell”. Senate majority leader Harry Reid caved in after Senator Jim DeMint demanded the nearly 2000 page, earmark laden, omnibus bill be read aloud on the Senate flood.

The Senate will move to pass a “Continuing Resolution” to fund the government on a temporary basis. A similar CR has already passed the house. This will allow the Republicans to strip out the offensive earmarks and get a more GOP friendly bill considered in the next session of congress.

As previously reported here on Upstate Voice, critics suggest the Dream Act is nothing more than a back door plan to provide amnesty to hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens and their family members. Reid has scheduled the Dream Act for a vote on Saturday.
